The vadose zone is often the main factor controlling water movement from the land surface to the aquifer. Thus it strongly affects the rate of aquifer recharge and is critical for the use and management of groundwater. Flow rates and chemical reactions in the vadose zone also control whether, where, and how fast contaminants enter groundwater supplies.

For simulation results to be consistent with the estimated recent and current recharge for disturbed surface conditions (on the order of 6 cm/yr) and the observed relatively stable perched -water height during a year of pumping (~3.36 m), The complex temporal relationship between these two processes depends mainly on the thickness of the vadose zone between the infiltration system (e.g., recharge wells, irrigation basins) and the ground water table, the heterogeneity of the vadose zone, the volume of infiltrated water, and other factors. This project provides design and construction support to install 52 recharge wells for recharge and underground storage of reclaimed water supplies at two locations in the City. Vadose zone recharge wells and associated facilities, including reclaimed delivery pipelines and filters, were designed and constructed at two separate locations served by reclaimed water supplies from the South Water Reclamation Plant (WRP). 2020-08-13 · To provide adequate recharge, the dry wells should penetrate permeable formations for a substantial distance. The main problem with dry wells is clogging of the walls.

Groundwater Recharge Estimation using Unsaturated Numerical Models potential which determine the direction of the flow of water in soil (unsaturated zone).

Vadose zone recharge systems are used to bypass low-permeability material present at or close to land surface and have the additional advantages of being largely subsurface features and providing an opportunity for contaminant attenuation processes in the unsaturated zone to occur. The vadose zone is particularly important in the western U.S., where there is sometimes a deeper water table and, therefore, a larger vadose zone that may substantially influence natural recharge of groundwater, as well as contaminant transport. Water may move through the vadose zone in a counterintuitive fashion. This campus currently operates 11 existing vadose zone wells.
